Do Not
Dry Out Your Skin
Having suffered from acne
myself, I know it is all too easy
to dry out your skin. I
lived in the Midwest
where it was very humid and hot-which increased
my oil production. During
my teenage
years, I would use rubbing alcohol twice a day as a toner trying to get
rid of
the excess oil.
Now that I understand how
the skin works, I realize why this
was only making the situation worse rather than better.
If you dry out the surface of the skin, your
oil production goes into overdrive.
Because the surface cells are dry, like tissue
paper, your pores can be
blocked by those cells. This
traps the
oil being produced with an end result of even more clogged pores.
It is important to use
skin care products made for your skin
type. If the
products you are using
leave your skin feeling tight or irritated, they are too harsh for you. If you find
periodically that your skin is a
little crepey or flaky, use a 10%
strength alpha hydroxy (glycolic) acid once a
week to gently exfoliate
so your
pores will not be blocked.
It
is also important to note that no matter what type
of skin you have, using the wrong products can lead to inflammation,
irritation, excessive dryness, breakouts, or even dermatitis.
