Skin Tags
Skin
tags are small, finger-like, skin colored projections which are usually
benign. Although their exact cause is unknown, recent
research shows a link between skin tags and increased insulin levels
and sugar consumption.
In a study published 12/09 in Clinical and Experimental Medicine, the
connection between the skin lesions and increased insulin indicated
that people with 30+ skin tags were shown to have an increased risk of
type 2 diabetes.
When foods high in carbohydrates (white rice, pasta, bread,
pastries-all the good stuff) are eaten, your body releases insulin.
If you are not metabolozing those carbs correctly, insulin
will increase a lot, which will interfere with the metabolism of the
carbs. This is a cycle you do not want because as the cells
become resistant to insulin, more insulin is required to get the job
done. This is referred to as insulin resistance.
Now, if you have several skin tags, there may be other causes.
Increased tags are common in pregnant women and increased
hormones are blamed. They are also more common where clothing
rubs such as the bra area. If you are concerned, see your
doctor for a physical. Reducing your sugar intake can reverse
insulin resistance in some cases although it will not affect existing
skin tags. Those can be removed by a dermatologist.
